It is this theme of community service that has become the core and center
of Practicing Authentic Love: Multicultural Engagement in Tanzania, East
Africa. We are partnering with the United African Alliance Community Center
(UAACC), founded by Pete and Charlotte O’Neal in 1991 in Arusha, Tanzania
through which we will share our gifts and talents directly with Tanzanian youth
and adults. UAACC was founded for the purpose of providing programs and
projects for the enrichment of the Arusha community, both urban and rural---and
also to promote closer ties to communities in America, particularly African-
American communities. Their motto is “Sharing Knowledge through
Community Development”.
Practicing Authentic Love: Multicultural Engagement in Tanzania
An Evolving Story
Over the years UAACC has developed organically in response to the
needs of the communities it serves. They offer classes in computer literacy,
English, the visual and performing arts, design, sewing, handicrafts, film-making,
yoga and sports. Moreover, due to an expressed need in the community, The
Leaders of Tomorrow Children’s Home was created in December 2008. There
are currently 18 children, ages 4 to 9 who are learning life-sustaining skills,
exploring the wonders of the world while maintaining ties to their village
communities.
Thus it is in this setting of youth empowerment and community
development that we will work, play, learn, share and celebrate hand-in-hand
with our brothers and sisters in Arusha. If you are a teacher, carpenter, artist,
entrepreneur, or simply a person who enjoys working with people and making a
positive difference in their lives, this journey is for you. Through community
service we will model and experience positive lifestyles, creativity, peace,
empowerment, volunteerism, community and love, authentic love.
