Welcome to Edge of World Retreats

Poets with History
Monday, January 10 – Monday, January 17, 2011

Facilitated by Jericho Brown

Using Marina Tsvetaeva's distinction ‘Poets with History' as our title, this workshop will speak to the ways in which historical research informs poetry. One important social function of poetry may be to document the subjectivity, if not the collective memory, of a people, a nation, and a time.

    Your Writers' Retreat and Workshop in Atlanta includes:

  • Facilitation by Jericho Brown
  • Accommodations
  • Breakfast daily
  • Airport transfers
  • 7 day subway pass
  • 2 Dinners; Welcome and Farewell group dinner

Our workshop will take place at the Atlanta Boutique Hotel Indigo, centrally located in Midtown Atlanta.

"Poets with History"

This workshop will take place in Atlanta, GA and utilize the city's famous annual MLK Jr. day events as a backdrop.  Using Marina Tsvetaeva's distinction "Poets with History" as our title, this workshop will speak to the ways in which historical research informs poetry.  One important social function of poetry may be to document the subjectivity, if not the collective memory, of a people, a nation, and a time.  We will ask what differences exist between history and memory, and we will shed light on how poetry historicizes little known events as well as how
poets use history to transcend the weight of time.

Admitted applicants should submit 3-5 poems that they would like to have workshopped.  At least three of these will be discussed in workshop, but possibly more.  The deadline for submitting workshop poems is December
01, 2010.  These poems will then be distributed to the workshop participants.  All participants will be expected to have read and taken notes on all poems, thus being prepared to workshop them alongside Dr. Brown.

Aside from attending events, each day the group will have a 3-hour workshop, with a ten to fifteen minute break halfway through.  In addition, each participant will have the option of discussing their writing with Dr. Brown in a one-on-one session of no more than 30 minutes.

Applications for this workshop will be accepted from September 01 until October 31, 2010.  Early applications are recommended.

Application Process:

In order to be considered for admission into the workshop/retreat, each applicant will have to submit: at least two of the following three items:

(a) resume;
(b) 3-5 sample poems, 8 pages max;
(c) a brief personal statement detailing what you hope to gain from this workshop/why you should be admitted, 1-page max.
